Skilled Trades Ontario is an agency of the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development responsible for apprenticeship and skilled trades certification in Ontario. It was established through the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, 2021.
We are committed to making it easier for skilled trades professionals to access services, promoting careers in the skilled trades and addressing the labour shortage. We want to make Ontario the place where skilled trades professionals thrive.
Our work
Skilled Trades Ontario is responsible for trades certification in Ontario, including:
- establishing apprenticeship programs, including training standards, curriculum standards and certification exams
- assessing experience and qualifications of individuals who have not completed an apprenticeship program in Ontario
- issuing Certificates of Qualification in all trades with certifying exams
- renewing Certificates of Qualification in compulsory trades
- maintaining a Public Register of people authorized to work in compulsory trades
- researching apprenticeships and the trades

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development oversees trades legislation and regulations, including prescribing/deprescribing trades, scopes of practice, trade classifications and ratios.
